What is goal setting?
I have always had a special appreciation for disciplined, top-level athletes, successful business people and achievers in all fields who manage being constant in what they have planned for their life so their dreams become reality.
Generally, people like to dream about what they could do in a month, a year or maybe five years, admire other people who manage to meet their goals and want to do the same. It looks cool and admirable. But from admiration to action, there is a long time of careful and realistic planning, much work and constancy.
We believe in the power of goals. But we also think that goals would mean nothing without planning, as well as true and immediate readiness for action. Goal setting requires time, dedication and awareness that accomplishing an objective, motivates you to make the effort for the next one.
Goal setting is very connected to the purpose you have set for your life.
When you have a purpose for which you are willing to fight, goal setting is only the crossing stone that eventually allows you to reach your goal. Moreover, planning your goals gives you vision, both for short and long-term and if they are properly organized, it will help you manage your time and resources.
All of the above is an answer of the question: WHY do I need goal setting? WHY do I need to plan my actions? The following important question would be: HOW can I create a proper plan? HOW do I organize my actions?
We think that the first step is awareness. Where am I now? What are my dreams? What am I doing today to fulfill my dreams? Am I making any progress toward them?
There are a number of things you can do to carry out this evaluation process: working with a mentor, for those who need constant impulses, or applying techniques that you can do by yourself: reflection and meditation, discussions with friends.
But we believe that writing things on paper is one of the most useful things that you can do to know where you are, where you want to get and the way you have to go through. In most cases, a notebook planner can help you observe yourself like in a mirror, if you take the decision to be honest about what you are writing about.
You can start this process by giving yourself a quiet time to think only about what really gives you energy, what makes you feel full of life. Write truthfully about your dreams and rank them according to their importance and feasibility.
Do not forget to take everything in a row. Choose a dream that you consider the most important at the moment, and create a plan for 4-5 years, which consists of shorter duration plans: one year, six months, one month, and create a list of tasks for your daily routine to fulfill your one-month plan, and so on. We think that the most important thing is to check your progress in writing, constantly and honestly.
What do you need to be careful when deciding to plan your goals?
Even if you set up a plan from which you have proposed not to deviate, be flexible to re-evaluate your goals in such a way that they stay relevant and beneficial for you, regardless the circumstances. Following a blind plan can destabilize your critical thinking and your analytical skills.
Set achievable targets.
It is important to set achievable goals. If you don`t fully believe in reaching them, they can be very difficult to meet, and this can have serious consequences: lack of confidence in your abilities or the failure to follow a long-term plan of your goals.
Remember constantly why you do what you do.
Be honest with you.
At any time of planning, whether you write on your daily planner or you take action, try to stay authentic to yourself. Write achievable goals, related to the things you really want to do, not things you imagine being cool and that you’ve seen interesting to other people.
Goal setting help you set a clear direction to your goal and a useful system can decide your progress.
