What is a realistic goal?
The starting point
„Can you imagine what amazing changes could we do with this new NGO? Starting with this course and other small projects, in 10 years we can have international volunteers and at least 5 sponsors. I am so excited.”
I did it again. In the last nine months, I had similar conversations almost every morning with my colleague. Honestly, less than half of our plans remained in those exciting conversations. I am curious about something, can you identify our fault?
Well, I will give you an answer based on Theodore Roosevelt quote:
“Be practical as well as generous in your ideals. Keep your eyes on the stars, but remember to keep your feet on the ground.”
The problem we identified in our conversation is that we just kept our eyes on the stars and forgot to come back on the ground. For sure, is very healthy to visualize our potential success based on the plans we have, but we need to tackle life as it is.
Features of a realistic goal
In the process of goal setting, being realistic is the road to make a goal come true in your life.
A realistic goal has the following features.
Firstly, analyze the given circumstances in your life and see if your effort for the accomplishment you want is a reasonable option.
Secondly, a realistic goal inspires you and so it puts you to work. Having a clear and down-to-earth goal, you cannot see your working process being harsh.
Anthony Robbins had a smart quote on that:
”People are not lazy, they simply have impotent goals. That is goals that do not inspire them.”
Thirdly, a realistic goal is a goal you know you can achieve. Even if the methods used to achieve the goal can change, you can clearly visualize which is the result and when it`s going to happen.
Moreover, when you set a realistic goal, you are aware that you have the experience to overcome the obstacles between you and your goal.
Also, a realistic goal must be representative of the direction in which your life is going. Ask yourself honestly which is the reason for setting a certain aim and based to your answer, take a stand decision.
Additionally to all the features mentioned, make an effort during the process to be rational and not very excited in an exaggerated way. Be practical and keep your feet on the ground.
The feet on the ground
Coming back to the conversations I had with my colleague, there are many speakers who encourage their followers to dream without limitation. They say our potential is infinite and we can be whoever we want to be and do whatever we want to do. That is why some of you will disagree with our direction and give us the argument of ”unlimited dreaming”.
But, you`ll be surprised. We also believe in dreaming in order to make our wildest wishes come true. In the same time, we stand more on the opinion we should dream and keep our feet on the ground too. Being excited for five minutes and then taking a step back and ask ourselves some important questions. We call this a ”down-to-earth approach” which includes all the elements mentioned above and an extra aspect called ”writing”.
